Zaanstad opts for traffic signs made of sustainable materials
The municipality of Zaanstad was the initiator of the regional traffic signs tender from the Amsterdam Metropolitan Region.
The core of this tender was that only sustainable traffic signs were to be supplied and placed.
Here we have adopted a 2-track approach:
Track 1: Refurbishing old road signs.
Over the next four years, we will reuse an estimated 80% of old aluminum traffic signs as Refurbished traffic signs. Economically depreciated but technically reusable traffic signs are cleaned and given a new signface (sticker). When a traffic sign is too damaged to be reused, the aluminum is reused in the chain.
Councilwoman for Sustainability Annette Baerveldt: “I am proud of this approach. We no longer need to use new raw materials like aluminum and steel as a result. That is also the goal of a circular city, not to further deplete the earth.”
Track 2: Honeycomb road signs
We will supply the remaining 20% of the required traffic signs in one of our honeycomb models. These traffic signs are made from organic or recycled plastic raw materials. The sustainable honeycomb traffic signs must meet the same quality requirements as traditional aluminum traffic signs. The honeycomb traffic signs are fully CE certified and therefore comply with the NEN-3381 and EN-12899 standard.
Alderman for Sustainability Annette Baerveldt: “As a municipality, we are working hard to make our own procurement more sustainable. This is an important step towards a circular city. Almost on every street corner you find a road sign. In the longer term, this will therefore save a considerable amount of CO2.”
Case study Metropolitan region of Amsterdam
Three cooperating municipalities from the Amsterdam Metropolitan Region will purchase traffic and street signs over the next four years through a tender process. The participating municipalities primarily want to reuse existing regional old traffic signs while supporting and implementing innovative solutions. With our unique Plan of Action, we can not only support but further strengthen the sustainability goals of the Municipality of Zaanstad. We provide the optimal balance between reuse and innovation with our honeycomb traffic signs.
