How the market vision led to inspiration for the CirQ 100% recycled aluminum road sign.

The goal of the Market Vision and Purchasing Strategy Buyer Group Traffic Signs and Signage is ambitious: to make the enormous amount of traffic signs in the Netherlands more sustainable. With more than 3 million signs, of which at least 600,000 are considered unnecessary, there is an urgent need for a sustainable approach (source: CROW).

The Buyer Group has developed a well-thought-out market vision with four process steps. These focus on reducing the number of traffic signs, refurbishing (Re-Sign) old signs, using biobased or recycled materials, and as a final step, deploying conventional traffic signs when other options are not feasible.

From vision and strategy to production

Climate Signs has embraced this procurement strategy and turned it into action. This vision and strategy has enabled us to develop the 100% recycled aluminum road sign (CirQ). Based on circular principles, this sign contributes significantly to reducing CO2 emissions, conserving and reusing primary resources, minimizing waste and supporting the circular economy.

Refurbishing to infinity

Refurbishing plays an important role in sustainability. However, Buyer Group recognizes that this process is finite. Therefore, in the absence of refurbished stock, it is necessary to switch to “new” aluminum traffic signs with a Cradle to Cradle certificate or to a CirQ traffic sign.

This approach allows asset managers to take a sustainable step during tenders, even if they are not yet ready for an innovative BIO road sign. It illustrates the power of collaboration and vision in our pursuit of a circular and sustainable future for our road and street furniture.
